Forgotten Gem: A League Of Their Own (1992)

Basing an entire movie campaign around the 'from the team that brought you...' tagline is always a dangerous thing to do. Sometimes it will only fuel uncertainty but if you're a fan of their previous work, it'll probably get you a little excited. Case in point, 1992's A League Of Their Own which reunited Tom Hanks with the director of Big, Penny Marshall. Prepare yourself for another hilariously dated 1990s trailer.

A fictionalized story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) is stars Geena Davies, Tom Hanks, Lori Pett, Rosie O'Donnell and some woman whose apparently released a few songs. Or something.

Yeah, that one. Actually I should point out that Madonna is perfectly fine in this even though like Desperately Seeking Susan, she's essentially playing herself. A League Of Their Own has the distinction of being somewhat memorable mainly because of one scene and one line in particular. Anyone who's seen The Burbs knows that watching Tom Hanks go bat shit doo-lally is hilarious and it's especially funny when his ranting makes a girl cry. If you have no idea what I'm on about, hang your head in shame.

Apart from that, there's plenty of strong performances and a few side splitting cameos (take a bow, Jon Lovitz) but I'd like to point out that it features one of my favourite actors in a small but important role.

You don't doubt the Strathairn.
