The Disney 50

On Tuesday morning I sat amongst some film critic people far more important than I am (and Robbie Collin, who I'm happy to say DID NOT eat all the pastries) to listen to a person talk into a microphone and tell us about the very exciting collaboration between the BFI Southbank and Disney. You see, every weekend in 2011 they'll be showing all 50 of Disney's animated features on the big screen. Now, if you're anything like me and grew up going to the cinema and laughing your arse off at Robin Williams' Genie, singing 'Be Our Guest' or playing 'Under The Sea' in a steel pan band (we won a competition, bitch) then you should love this.

I have a massive amount of love for Disney films and still have my 30 strong VHS collection that my dad used to buy me each and every year, so the thought of watching these gems on the big screen is just too exciting. Yes, even in those fucking awful, back breaking seats. Until then, let's see what I think of Disney's said 50:

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - Not my fav but I don't want hate on those little people.

2. Pinocchio (1940) - Again, not my favourite but since it has some frankly astonishing animation for the time, we must bow before its greatness.

3. Fantasia (1940) - Amazing and horrendously underrated.

4. Dumbo (1941) - My second favourite Disney film. I had this mother on Betamax and watched it all the time. I even love the racism.

5. Bambi (1942) - Honestly couldn't give a fuck.

6. Saludos Amigos (1942) - Say what?

7. The Three Caballeros (1944) - Say who?

8. Make Mine Music (1946) - Erm...

9. Fun and Fancy Free (1947) - Eh?

10. Melody Time (1948) - Is this the one with the black man singing by a fence? If so, I like his jaunty hat.

11. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) - Sounds sexy.

12. Cinderella (1950) - Boring as fuck but still a classic.

13. Alice in Wonderland (1951) - Wipes the floor with Tim Burton's version. Then again, most films can do that.

14. Peter Pan (1953) - Never liked this story or film.

15. Lady and the Tramp (1955) - I love sexy dogs.

16. Sleeping Beauty (1959) - See Cinderella.

17. One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) - FANTASTIC.

18. The Sword in the Stone (1963) - UNDERRATED AMAZINGNESS.

19. The Jungle Book (1967) - Ignore that Incredible idiot, this is a brilliant film.

20. The Aristocats (1970) - Yawn.

21. Robin Hood (1973) - See The Sword in the Stone.

22. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) - I'm asleep.

23. The Rescuers (1977) - I'm in a coma.

24. The Fox and the Hound (1981) - I'm dead.

25. The Black Cauldron (1985) - The wha wha?

26. The Great Mouse Detective (1986) - Is he anything like Danger Mouse?

27. Oliver & Company (1988) - Who are ya?

28. The Little Mermaid (1989) - Oh yes, a piece of fucking perfection that shaped my childhood and let the world know that Alan Menken is a GOD among us.

29. The Rescuers Down Under (1990) - It was all going so well...

30. Beauty and the Beast (1991) - Absolutely stunning film that transcended animation and landed a Best Picture Oscar nod. Words cannot describe.

31. Aladdin (1992) - ROBIN WILLIAMS FTW!

32. The Lion King (1994) - Overrated 3 star film. I love me some Scar though.

33. Pocahontas (1995) - Now I'm sleepy...

34. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) - Who cares?

35. Hercules (1997) - You know how I feel about this. Forgotten Gem with a brilliant score. Oh Alan, marry me.

36. Mulan (1998) - Meh.

37. Tarzan (1999) - Double meh.

38. Fantasia (2000 (1999) - Is this a typo? I copied it straight from the BFI, blame them.

39. Dinosaur (2000) - Never heard of it.

40. The Emperor's New Groove (2000) - Future Forgotten Gem. That is all.

41. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) - [Insert yawn, sleeping, dead joke]

42. Lilo & Stitch (2002) - Never seen it.

43. Treasure Planet (2002) - See above.

49. The Princess and the Frog (2009) - YAY! I've seen this. Tis good.

50. Tangled (2010) - I've seen this but signed an embargo so I can't tell you how good it is anything.
